Oral Cancer Susquehanna Oral and Facial Surgery and Dental Implant Center PA 17701Keeping your regular dental appointments with us is the best way to prevent more serious conditions from going undetected. You can be proactive at home and check for signs of oral cancer on your own by noticing early signs and symptoms.

When left untreated, oral cancer that starts in one area of the mouth will spread to other areas, including the neck and head.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Some of the most common symptoms of oral cancer are:

•  A persistent sore throat,
•  A canker sore that doesn't heal within two weeks,
•  Trouble swallowing,
•  Mouth or ear pain that is not related to another illness,
•  Hoarseness.

Steps to Check for Oral Cancer

•  Extend your tongue out as far as you can and look closely for any white patches or lumps. The tongue is the most common site for oral cancer.
•  Feel your lips and cheeks for any unusual lumps and bumps. Watch out for white or red areas that look suspicious.
•  The floor of your mouth should not have any lumps or red and white spots.
•  The roof of your mouth should be clear of lumps, bumps, and red or white patches.
•  Feel your neck for any abnormal bumps or lumps.
•  Examine your tonsils for any signs of redness, bumps, or enlargement.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 52,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States in 2018. Of those, around 10,000 will die. Prevention is the best way to avoid serious oral diseases such as cancer.

Oral cancer can be treated with early detection, so it's imperative that you conduct your own examination at home and visit us regularly. Our dentists always look for early signs of oral cancer during your regular visits, so don't skip those!
