Formlabs 3D Printer

The newest technologies that are being developed are pretty incredible. One that you may be familiar with is 3D printing. Rather than printing a picture on a page, this technology prints 3-dimensional objects. This technology is becoming more common and even has applications in the field of dentistry. At Susquehanna Oral and Facial Surgery and Dental Implant Center, we utilize a 3D printer to help us provide you with a much higher quality of care.

What is a 3D Printer?

A 3D printer is a type of technology that allows us to custom create dental restorations, molds, and more from a 3D scan of your mouth. Rather than carving the image out of a block of ceramic, like CAD/CAM technology, a 3D printer prints objects one layer at a time. With a 3D printer, we can print objects, whether they be a dental restoration, an orthodontic appliance, or model, from a variety of different materials. The 3D printer can even replicate the smallest details in your teeth for a much more realistic appearance.

The process is fairly simple. First, we take a digital scan of your mouth. The scan is displayed on a computer monitor, and we can use specialized software to design the restoration, model, or mockup. Once our design is complete, we send the information to the 3D printer. Within just a few hours, the fabrication of the item is complete.

Uses for a 3D Printer in a Dental Office

There are several uses for a 3D printer in the dental office. Uses include:
•  Creating dental restorations, including crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants. After taking a 3D scan, we can use specialized software to design your restorations and bring them to life.
•  Orthodontic appliances, including braces, aligners, and retainers.
•  Surgical guides for implant placement.
•  Dental models, which allows you to avoid the need for taking an impression with messy, uncomfortable impression putty.
•  Night guards, for providing relief from the symptoms of bruxism.
•  Building tools. The 3D printer is not just for creating new teeth. Some 3D printers can even be used to make dental drills and other tools that we may need for your dental treatments.

Benefits of the 3D Printer

There are many benefits to using a 3D printer.
•  We create your restorations one layer at a time rather than carving them out of a block of ceramic. This can help us to provide greater accuracy.
•  We can print restorations, tools, and models from a variety of different materials. We are not just limited to one material.
•  We can print more than just restorations. We can also print orthodontic appliances, night guards, surgical guides, tools, and more.
•  3D printing is often paired with 3D impressions or other 3D imaging technology. This means no more messy impression putty, making the whole process of getting dental restorations much more pleasant.
•  We can provide you with a variety of same-day restorations.
•  Treatments are generally faster and more accurate.
•  With 3D printing, you save money.
•  You save time. With accurate models of your mouth, the need for additional impressions, and more impression putty, is eliminated.
