Why All on 4 is Better than Dentures

a patient and staff member from Susquehanna Oral and Facial Surgery and Dental Implant Center
Tooth loss is a serious issue that significantly impacts every part of your life. Basic tasks like eating and speaking suddenly become much more challenging. The quality of your smile decreases. Tooth loss even affects the health of your jawbone, leading to a loss of bone mass and gradual changes in the shape of the jaw. The more teeth you lose, the more significant the effects. Dental implants have quickly become a widely popular treatment for replacing missing teeth, including replacing an entire arch of teeth. However, to place implants, you need to have sufficient bone mass in your jaw. Without enough bone mass, implants may fail. It used to be that if you did not have enough bone mass for implants, you were stuck with dentures. At Susquehanna Oral and Facial Surgery and Dental Implant Center, we can provide a better alternative to dentures with All on 4.

Traditional Dentures

Dentures have been a treatment for replacing missing teeth for hundreds of years. The dentures used today consist of acrylic resin teeth that are set into an acrylic gum-colored base. The base, which is supported by your gum tissue, is removable and should be taken out every night for care.

While modern dentures are made to be much more natural in appearance, they do have several significant disadvantages. First, the extra care they require every night can be tedious. Because dentures rest directly on your gums, they put pressure on sensitive tissue, which can restrict blood flow and cause discomfort. Dentures can slip out of place and move around, causing painful denture sores. Additionally, dentures cannot stop the bone loss in your jaw. In fact, ill-fitting dentures can speed up bone loss. As you lose bone mass, your dentures will no longer fit properly, which results in the need for a new restoration.

Replacing Teeth with All on 4

All on 4 is a dental implant treatment that provides you with an alternative to traditional dentures when you have suffered too much bone loss to support the typical 6 to 8 implant posts needed for a regular full arch replacement. In addition to allowing you to enjoy the benefits of dental implants, the All on 4 treatment avoids the need for a bone graft, meaning that you do not need additional surgery.

While the All on 4 treatment uses fewer implants than a regular implant supported denture, the success is not in the number of implant posts. Instead, the success of this treatment lies in the placement of the 4 posts that are used. Two posts are placed vertically at the front of the jaw. There is naturally more bone mass in this region of the jaw. The other two posts are placed toward the back of the jaw, one on each side. These posts are inserted at a 45-degree angle. This angle maximizes contact between the posts and your existing jawbone. Additionally, when placed in the upper jaw, the angle helps to avoid the sinus cavities, avoiding the need for a sinus lift.

Why is All on 4 Better?

There are several reasons why All on 4 is a better treatment option than dentures. Benefits include:
•  Greater comfort. Instead of resting directly on your gums, your dental restorations are supported by the implant posts and your jawbone.
•  Your dental restorations are made from ceramic. Ceramic provides a much more realistic appearance, mimicking many of the natural properties of tooth enamel.
•  Your restorations are held securely in place on the posts. They will not slip around or fall out.
•  You can brush and floss your restorations just like your real teeth.
•  The implant posts stimulate your jawbone just like the roots of your real teeth. This stimulation helps to stop bone loss in your jaw and prevent new bone loss from occurring.

With All on 4, we can replace an entire arch of missing teeth without the need for a bone graft, providing you with a long-term, even permanent, solution to tooth loss.
